There are many people who find setting goals for themselves helps them to become more successful. When you are working as a nurse, setting goals can be a challenge at times as nurses are continuously busy with patients and filling out charts and other paperwork. Routines are set and breaking free can be difficult to do at times. This means nurses have a harder time recognizing free time when it presents itself. Although, setting goals as well as realistic things to achieve is simple, and can help you to get out of patterns and other routines that keep you from being happy or feeling stressed and worn out a lot.
You should begin with researching and exploring various paths available to you as a nurse. These can include pediatrics, cardiology, ER, OR, surgery, geriatrics and much more. By taking the time to learn and remember the basics of which you learned in nursing school, you can reconnect with colleagues and other co-workers. For those of you, who work in vast facilities such as a hospital, you may want to consider talking to a manager or supervisor to see about working in other areas of the facility that could be potentially interesting to you.
Take the time to look over specialties or other career paths that could interest you at some point and choose a few options. Write them down and maybe write down why they interest you or why you would enjoy working in that desired field.
Write down the pros and cons of each one. For instance, one may require you to travel a lot and this is not something that everyone finds exciting. Others may love the idea of traveling all over the world and therefore this would be something advantageous. The pay is another thing that takes people to new jobs, and perhaps that travel nursing job pays more. These are all things to consider and write down. The demand for certain fields such as geriatrics is another thing to write down. This means there will always be a job available for you.
Take into consideration the amount of education you have and the skills you have earned up until now. If a certain career requires other experience or education that you don't currently have, make arrangements to complete these requirements. This will help you to move ahead and begin your career in a field you are passionate about. You can jot down ways to help you get ahead and other ways to receive your training such as through internships or getting training in your spare time from your current employer. This is a great way to get training while advancing in your current position. Once training is completed, you are going to be guaranteed a job in your current company.
You should always think about what steps are needed in order to become a nurse in your desired field. Perhaps you want to work with certain people who have cancer or who are in hospice care. Think about what you need to do to get to that point. This is all a great way to help you achieve and set career goals to better yourself.
