During the sweltering summer months it is important for you to stay cool at all times. If you are engaging in various physical activities this can make things more difficult, and therefore extra measures will need to be taken. In order to avoid dehydration, sunstroke, heatstroke, and all associated problems, consider these tips.
Always make sure that you wear light clothing, and preferably garments that are white in color. White clothing will help to reflect the sunlight away from your body, thus helping you to stay cooler. Dark clothing, however, will absorb the heat and this can compound the problem. Obviously light clothing like linens and other such skimpy garments will also be helpful in keeping your body temperature down.
Make sure that you avoid any outdoor activities during the heat of the day. The hottest hours of the day usually occur between about 11 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. If you have any physical activities that you want to do, try to get these done early in the morning, slightly later in the afternoon, or in the early evening.
You need to stay hydrated at all times and therefore should be drinking water throughout the day. When the temperature is very high you will lose water very quickly and therefore dehydration can set in without you really knowing. Try to carry around a bottle of water and fill it up every couple of hours. It would also be advisable to avoid beverages that may promote dehydration, such as those that have high levels of caffeine and alcohol.
As well as wearing light clothing and drinking regularly you also need to eat light foods. If you are eating heavy foods like carbohydrates then these will take more energy to digest, and this will have an impact upon your body temperature. Instead, during very hot days you should be eating salads, fruits, and other lighter meals.
If you do want to engage in any outdoor activities then try to make sure they are water-based. For example, get out the paddling pool and play with your kids in the garden, or play under the sprinklers. If you want to get out of the house then get yourself down to the local swimming pool. When doing so, however, always make sure that you bring along enough hydration.
It is also important to get plenty of sleep so that you remain energized. Make sure that your house has a decent air conditioning system and try to stick with regular sleeping hours.
